Publish to 3dvia part 2

Posted on 1:29 AM by Unknown
Uploading your models is not the end of it though more just the beginning as you can create an online scene whereby you can invite friends, colleagues and customers to view your models. You will need to do this functionality via the website though, but it is fairly straightforward and once done you can save it to view again. To create a scene go to “You” on the 3dvia site and under the drop down menu select “create a scene” from toolbox heading.

You will then get a choice of prebuilt scenes of which you need to select one. Once you have selected a scene you can give it a name and add a description, you can also set options on if you wish to invite people to view this scene. When you have filled out the information and are finished you need to select the blue button that says “Create a Scene”, however the thing that caught me out was nothing happens. The screen doesn’t return to the main menu and you do not get any feedback telling you if it has worked. Trust me it has and don’t keep hitting the button like I did as this is creating multiple scenes in your account. All you need to do is hit the button once and then go back to your dashboard where alongside your uploaded models you will see the scene you have created.

Right now here comes the cool part of this site. Select your scene and hit the play button you will see in the middle of the window where your scene should be. You will have to wait a minute with the 3dvia player is starting up and you should then be prompted to select and avatar if not asked before. The avatar is going to be the online you so have some fun if you want, but all the characters are fairly normal, sorry no glamour models or footy players.

When the scene has loaded you will see an option in the right hand corner called “Design Scene” and this brings up a menu to search for models of wish there is a radio button to “my models” and this will show your uploaded models. To add your models to the scene, hover the cursor over the thumbnail of your model and you will see “add”. You need to left mouse button click the “add” and then left mouse button click in your scene to add the model. Drag and drop does not work. Your model will be tiny however, so what you will see are some white dots and you need to drag one of these which will scale your model.

Once you have it at the right size you can also rotate it by hovering the cursor over the rotating arrows or move the model by hovering over the 4 way arrows. Now to stop adjusting it you can lock the model by a right mouse button click on the model which will bring up a menu of which you will see an unlocked padlock. Select the padlock and it will now lock the model size, position and orientation.
You are now ready to view your model and this is done via your avatar. To move the avatar you can use the arrow keys along with the mouse which will adjust where you are looking or just use the mouse by using a left mouse button click to select a point you wish to walk too. I prefer a combination of both, with the arrows keys for movement and the mouse for where I wish to look.
Your scene is complete and you can now share the experience by inviting other to look around. You will see a mail icon below the scene which says “invite your friends”. This will send them an email asking them to view your scene by going to 3dvia.com. They will need to create an account and once they have done so they will see an on their dashboard your scene. When they select this they will also be able to select an avatar and they can then roam around your scene with the models you have inserted.

It is a great online showroom and may even be a way of businesses operating without the usual constraints of real life showrooms. This technology would allow customers to walk around and take a look at the product you are offering or even of way of having design reviews online perhaps across different countries.I hope you give this a go and I am still discovering new aspects about this site myself, but I like what I have seen so far and wanted to share it.

Publish to 3dvia Part 1

Posted on 1:01 AM by Unknown

Do you want the ability to share your 3d models or be able to carry them around with you? If so then you may be interested in what 3dvia can offer. 3dvia offers a list of products, but what I wish to show you is how you can create an account with 3dvia that gives you the ability to share your models either online or via a 3dvia application that can be run on the Ipad or Iphone. The basic steps to share your models are quite simple. Once your model is finished and ready for sharing have it open in SolidWorks and go to the file menu. On the file menu you will see an option for “Publish to 3dvia.com”.

Select this and a pop will appear asking you to login, if you have not done this before you will need to register which can be done via this pop up. Once you have logged in the next screen ask for a bit of information about the model you are uploading. One of the main choices you need to consider is whether the model is for private viewing or public. If you select Private all you really need to input is the file name, descriptions and tags. If you chose to make it public you can add if the file is allowed to be download, quality of the file and your name. You can now hit publish and your model will be uploaded to your account.

To view your models you can do so by going to http://www.3dvia.com/ and login. Then go to “You” on the menu bar and select “Dashboard” from the drop down. This will show you all the models you have uploaded and allow you to view them. If you have an IPAD or Iphone you can download the application via Itunes or on the 3dvia site. This application will allow you to view your models uploaded to your account so wherever you are you will have access to your 3d models.

I hope you find this post useful and I have made this as a 2 part post due to the amount their is to show you. Stay tuned for more.

SolidWorks Pack and Go overview

Posted on 10:26 PM by Unknown

File >> Pack and Go collects all referenced files (parts, drawings, sub-assemblies) from your assembly and drawing files. It's a great way to duplicate a project if you need to make changes to the design, or move files between computers - you can even create a zip file directly from the dialog box.

You can also use Pack and Go to rename individual files and their destinations (by double-clicking in the respective fields), or you can use the Select/Replace... button to make bulk or batch changes to all of your files - e.g. replacing a specific text string such as a Job number from every single file with a new one.

Pack and Go will create the new files while maintaining file references between all of your part, assembly and drawings, even if names and folder structures have changed.

Searching SolidWorks Web Help from the Firefox address bar

Posted on 6:19 PM by Unknown

Following on from a previous post, if you use Firefox as your web browser, you can create a custom bookmark to quickly search the SolidWorks Web Help directly from the address bar.

  1. In Firefox >> Bookmarks >> RMB in the drop down menu somewhere >> New Bookmark
  2. Name: SolidWorks Web Help Google Search
  3. Location: http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Ahelp.solidworks.com+%s
  4. Tags: ignore
  5. Keyword: sw
  6. Description: Fill in if you like

  7. Click Add

Now, go to the address bar (keyboard shortcut CTRL+L), clear it and type “sw colour design table” without the quotes, and press Enter – SHAZAM!

Of course, you can create other custom bookmarks – the “+%s” tells Firefox to add whatever you type in the address bar to the web address preceding it. In case you’re wondering, web addresses can’t contain colons (:), so the colon in “site:” needs to be replaced with %3A.

The Keyword field determines what you need to type first into the address bar to use the bookmark so make it something short and easy to remember.

If you're using another browser, don't despair, most browsers should have this functionality - a bit of Googling should show you how to do it.

Here's a way to do the same thing in Chrome.
Here's how you can do it in Internet Explorer.

Happy searching!

Searching SolidWorks Web Help through Google

Posted on 11:07 PM by Unknown
Since SolidWorks 2010, by default the Help documentation launched from the application is stored online as a series of web pages, known as Web Help – this ensures it can be kept as up-to-date as possible.

But don’t worry if you don’t have internet access – when you launch the Help file you will be prompted to open the offline copy installed on your machine instead. And if you don’t like the Web Help, you can disable it by unchecking SolidWorks >> Help >> Use SolidWorks Web Help.

Because the Help files are now online, you can browse them through your normal web browser:

2011 SolidWorks Help - Welcome to SolidWorks Online Help

Rather than using the in-built Web Help search field in the top right corner, you can search all help documentation using Google.

In the Google search field, type “site:help.solidworks.com” without the quotes (note there is also no space between “site:” and “help.solidworks.com”), followed by your search terms – voila!

Searching through Google gives you the benefit of more relevant results, although this isn’t as much of a problem with the SW Web Help search if you know the title of the page you’re searching for.

However, here’s an example where we don’t know the title of the page; we want to know the formula used to configure part colour in a Design Table (as you’ll see, it’s not something you’d memorise!).

Searching for the keywords “colour design table” yields these results:

  • SW Help Search
  • Google, limited to help.solidworks.com

The page we are after is the first result through Google, but only the 7th result through the Web Help search.

The “site:help.solidworks.com” term in the search above limits your search terms to the SolidWorks web domain hosting the help files. You can use this to force Google to search any web domain – one I also use a lot is “site:en.wikipedia.org” which searches all English-language Wikipedia articles.

You can also learn about more advanced Google search features:

  • http://www.google.com/landing/searchtips/#helpcenter

Happy searching!

SolidWorks User Group WA

Posted on 5:34 AM by Unknown

Solidtec Solutions has some great news to bring to the West Australian SolidWorks community that the SolidWorks User Group has been restarted and has it's 1st meeting planned.

The 1st meeting will be held at the Solidtec office at 26 Wheeler Street, Belmont on Wednesday March the 2nd. The agenda planned is as follows;

Agenda

5-5:30pm doors open - Pizza & Drinks supplied

6pm start - Introduction and welcome

6:30pm - Industry Speaker (Well Ops)

7:00pm - Coffee and Cake

7:15pm - SolidWorks Tips (Malcolm Cook on Surfacing)

7:45pm - Modeling competition (Team Event)

8:15pm - Thank you and close

A big thanks goes to Owen Hetherington who has put together a great website that I would encourage all West Australian SolidWorks users to sign up to which will then notify them of any meetings and updates.

One of the strongest selling features of SolidWorks is the great community that surrounds it and User groups are an integeral part of this. They make great networking venues and may even be chance to catch up with old colleagues and friends and hopefully a place to make some new ones.

Their are no conditions to coming along, so regardless of the fact if you have used SolidWorks for years or never seen it before please come along. The plan is to run these meetings every 3 months and they will be on a Wednesday night. Everyones opinion is valued so please sign up and feel free to make any suggestions on how these meetings should run.

The website for the WA SolidWorks user group is http://www.waswug.net/

Hope to see you there.

Where have the lights gone?

Posted on 4:47 AM by Unknown
I was recently asked by a customer who had upgraded to SolidWorks 2011 where had the Scene, lights & camera folder had gone, so I thought it would be worth repeating this on the Solidtec blog. In previous releases of SolidWorks the Scene, lights and camera folder was a hidden tree item that could be made visible by going to your system options, FeatureManager and selecting show for the S, L & C folder. The folder could then be seen on the feature manager design tree sitting below the annotation folder at the top of the tree.
So I hear you ask where is it now? A great enhancement with 2011 is they made decals available to all the SolidWorks packages and in doing so have made an extra tab on your feature manager which is called the Display Manager and has the coloured sphere icon. This tab now contains a film camera icon which I have highlighted in the attached picture which gives you access to Scenes, Lights and Cameras.
If you have never used the Scene, Lights & Camera folder I would highly recommend taking 5 minutes to see what adding a camera can do to capture great product shots. Please don't settle for a grey model with a standard isometric view as with very little effort this tab that is now available to all in 2011 can very quickly turn a grey blob into an engaging photo realistic image.
I think this type of query also reinforces the benefits of having a support contract as the customer had very little downtime as in 1 phone call to Solidtec support his question was answered and he was able to continue working.
Happy modeling.

Solidtec Solutions Customer wins Internet Correspondent Contest for SolidWorks World 2011

Posted on 8:05 PM by Unknown
Michael Lord, a CAD designer from Trakka (www.trakka.com.au) won the opportunity to become the Internet Correspondent for SolidWorks World 2011. For SolidWorks, it was his self-professed knowledge of US television from the 60’s and his promise to be an equal-opportunity offender that won him the contest.

Trakka Pty Ltd, based in Sydney, designs, develops and implements new products to the motorhome and special purpose vehicle market. As a Design Engineer for Trakka, Michael works on designs for special vehicles such as motorhomes, promotional vehicles, ambulances, mobile offices, wagering vehicles, and everything in between.

Michael admits that “I do get a little more proud when the vehicle is a mobile medical clinic, which you know is going to provide quality health service and benefits to children in remote areas”.

Trakka is a customer of Solidtec Solutions in Sydney, and have been thus since 2009. Solidtec provides Trakka with SolidWorks software and local support services that enable them to produce quality designs for their special vehicles.

“We have a good partnership with Solidtec, their service is first class. Issues are handled without delay and in an efficient manner” (Michael Lord, 2011)

Michael’s coverage of SolidWorks 2011 can be found on his blog at http://michaellord.posterous.com/
